Spirit Work Experience

Written by Hedland - Robbie Thursday, 23 May 2013 07:10

This week we have two Work Experience students visiting us from Perth. They hail from Central Institute of Technology, and are extremely enthusiastic about making careers in the radio industry. Now is a good time for you to meet them...because you never know...they could be coming through your airwaves very soon!

Cameron Scull

I’m Cam and I’ve just turned 24 as of today. I was born in the suburb of Kalamunda, just east of Perth, and have lived there my entire life. Currently on work experience with Spirit through a diploma course in radio that I’m studying, and really enjoying it so far!

I have a major love of music, with a wide appreciation of many different genres. From classic soul and punk rock, to modern electronica and indie rock. I’ve been a music lover ever since I can remember, thanks to a very early (two years!) chance encounter with a music video at home. I was transfixed at the time and it totally changed my life for the better. I soon found out that it was a ‘new’ three piece from Seattle, USA. They were a band called Nirvana. I was hooked from that moment on.

Some of my favourite artists currently are Radiohead (I saw them live twice in Melbourne last year. BEST. CONCERTS. EVER.), Boards of Canada, Ween, Neil Young and Yo La Tengo.

I began working in radio back in 2009, when I volunteered at a local station for a number of years. However, it was only when I started studying radio last year that I discovered how passionate I am for it. My dream is to be employed by a radio station full time sometime soon.

Aside from music, I also love Italian food (although I’m also partial to Mexican and Chinese), the arts (particularly film), travelling (especially Melbourne and Brisbane) and cats (at last count, I had four).

I’m hoping to work as a producer, or preferably a music director in the future.

Gemma Maddox

I’m Gemma. I moved to Perth from England back in 2004. I’m currently on work experience at Spirit 1026 Hedland through the radio diploma course that I’m studying. So far work experience has been great. Robbie and Sebb have been awesome teaching me some new skills and you may have heard me read the weather and tide reports.

I couldn’t imagine doing anything else apart from radio, I love all aspects from social media web content, announcing, producing and editing audio it’s so much fun and you’re always learning which is great.

I enjoy listening to all types of genres from pop, r&b, rap, indie, alternative and your classic hits. If you looked at my ipod you’ll find out how much I listen to Gaga, I went to both her Perth concerts last year. Ricki-Lee, Colette Carr who inspired me to have blue in my hair and The Ceremonies. They’re my favourite artists

Some fun facts, I used to play football as in (soccer) I’m a twitterholic and   love reading Lacee’s quotes they’re so inspiring.

PSY - back at it again!

Written by Hedland - Robbie Tuesday, 16 April 2013 11:27

Last year PSY's Gangnam Style had such a ridiculous amount of YouTube hits that it defies logic (currently 1.5 billion and counting, most watched YouTube video EVER). It went from being a viral internet video to a full blown Top 40 hit that you couldn't get away from! NOW the eccentric one from North Korea is back with a new song - Gentlemen. At the time of writing it has has over 81 million hits (yesterday when I saw it for the first time it had around 40 million, thats another 40 million in one day!).

I have to say, its pretty damn hilarious! Any music video that features the singer giving a hot girl a cupcake is more than ok in my book!!

Johnny Rotten not making friends on The Project

Written by Hedland - Robbie Wednesday, 10 April 2013 12:22

So Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols was interviewed on The Project last night and wasn't exactly polite to the guys on the show...particularly taking aim at Carrie Bickmore. Although he did make himself look like goose more than anything, I cant help wondering what the intent of his behavior was. I think it was one of two things;

1) He genuinely is a misogynous and old fashioned clown

2) He was trying to live up to his reputation of days gone by...drumming up publicity for a concert coming up

If it was the latter, hes actually done a pretty good job. Either way he still looks like a tool, but maybe a tool who's rock show now has a story in every major news publication in the country and is getting some full blown social media and radio traffic.

Check out the video below and decide for yourself...

Have-a-Try-Night: Register the kids today!

Written by Hedland - Robbie Tuesday, 09 April 2013 12:37

Parents, don't forget to register your kids for the 2013 Have-a-Try-Night at Marie Marland Reserve, South Hedland on Friday 12 April from 5pm to 7.30pm!

Last day to register is Tuesday 9 April - registration forms are available at all primary schools, and can be downloaded from the Town of Port Hedland website.

Have-a-Try-Night is a popular annual family event encouraging young people to participate in sporting and recreational activities, and allowing parents the chance to meet other parents in

the sporting community.

All registration forms can be returned to the child's respective school, or emailed the Town's Club and Project Development Officer Lucas Wimmer by close of business, Tuesday 9 April.

Young people, aged from five to 15 years, are invited to trial a number of local sports on offer, including Aussie Rules Football, soccer, rugby league, netball, hockey and softball.

There will be a free sausage sizzle at the end of the night so parents and their kids are encouraged to stay for the whole event.

AFL Top 8 Predictions for 2013

Written by Hedland - Robbie Thursday, 21 March 2013 11:22

Myself and Sebba have put out our predictions for a Final Top 8 of Season 2013. Since we haven't even reached Round 1 yet, they are two very speculative lists. After gazing into the Crystal Ball here's what we think!

ROBBIE

Hawthorn

Sydney

West Coast

Adelaide

Collingwood

Fremantle

Geelong

Carlton

SEBBA

Hawthorn

Adelaide

Sydney

Carlton

West Coast

Collingwood

North Melbourne

Essendon

It will be an interesting one, as there always seems to be a bolter that no-one predicts and a team who drops back off the pace and out of the 8.

A HIGH School student has received the shock of his life when model Kate Upton agreed to go to his prom.

Jake Davidson from Los Angeles made a two-minute YouTube video asking the Sports Illustrated cover girl to consider accompanying him to the event.

"I'm Jewish, 5'9" on a really good day - and I can't dance. At all," he jokes in the video. "You're Christian, 5'10", and that Cat Daddy video should have won an Oscar for best short film. You could say this is destiny.”

He argues that despite this the pair have a lot in common.

“You like sports, I like sports," he says. “You like fine dining, I like fine dining. You’re on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I read Sports Illustrated."

The 17-year-old was left speechless when he was discussing the video on the US Today show and Upton called in.

“This just got so much better now that you’re on the phone. I’m telling you it will be a great night, great evening – I could even get the curfew extended hopefully by my parents maybe," he said. "I hope you’d be interested if your schedule is free, and what time should I pick you up if you are interested?”

US model Kate Upton has agreed to be a 17-year-old's prom date if her schedule allows.

“I definitely have to check schedules, but you seem like so much fun and if everything works out, I’d love to go with you," Upton said. “I know we’d have a blast

“I absolutely love the video,’’ Upton said. “It was so hilarious and so creative. Thank you so much for doing that, I really appreciate it."

David Brent back with a vengence!

Written by Hedland - Robbie Tuesday, 19 March 2013 12:18

Taken from

http://www.thevine.com.au/entertainment/news/ricky-gervais-revives-david-brent-/

David Brent's been gone for ten years now. When we left him at the end of the original British series of The Office, the awkward boss had been fired from the Wernham Hogg Paper Company that he so delightfully mis-managed. Bar a Christmas special and a guest spot on the American version of the black comedy, Brent's been left on the shelf while his creator became a bona fide star.

So much so that it takes a while to gel with Gervais as Brent all over again. Revived here in this 10 minute short for Comic Relief in Britain (and to mark the launch of Gervais' new YouTube channel), Brent tells us he's been having the time of his life, repping cleaning products which finances his real passions: music. Short stories. Podcasting. Of course. "It's been mental."

Hedland Young Professionals

Written by Hedland - Robbie Monday, 18 March 2013 12:11

On Friday the 15th of March the Hedland Young Professionals kicked off 2013 with a bang, holding an excellent function at Bangers Bungalow. Approximately fifty under 35 workers from all walks of the Hedland Business community enjoyed a great mix of tapas and beverages will Brooklyn Hawk did a great job of the nights musical entertainment.

Also thrown into the mix was a speed dating type game where people discussed various issues and raffles. As ticket drawers of the raffle, I had the dubious honor of drawing my own number out of the box, forcing a redraw. But I had my revenge...as I also won second prize in the raffle. Unfortunately that was a women's Bodyshop gift pack, which I promptly gifted off to a lucky female friend.

All in all an excellent night, the second event is already being hotly anticipated with rumours of a boat trip in the near future.

A big congratulation to Nur Halik, Mark Scott and the rest of the team there at Hedland Young Professionals for organising a stellar night!
